Waimanalo, Kailua, Kaneohe and beyond!
Aloha and welcome to Oahu’s windward side! This part of the island is a true gem, boasting stunning natural beauty, rich history, and plenty of outdoor activities. In this travel blog, I’ll share with you some of my favorite spots and experiences on this incredible part of the island.
One of the first things you’ll notice as you make your way to the windward side is the lush, green landscape. The towering Ko’olau Mountains serve as a stunning backdrop, while the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean beckon you to come explore. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of this area is by taking a scenic drive along the Kamehameha Highway, which hugs the coastline and provides breathtaking views at every turn.
One of the first stops on your journey should be the town of Kaneohe. Here, you can visit the famous Valley of the Temples, a serene and peaceful cemetery nestled at the base of the mountains. The centerpiece of the valley is a stunning replica of a Japanese Buddhist temple, which is surrounded by lush gardens and koi ponds. It’s a beautiful spot to stop and reflect on the natural beauty of the area.
Another must-visit spot in Kaneohe is the nearby Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden. This 400-acre garden is a paradise of lush tropical plants and towering trees, with peaceful walking paths winding through the landscape. You can easily spend an entire day exploring the gardens, taking in the sights and sounds of this beautiful oasis.
Continuing along the Kamehameha Highway, you’ll come across the charming town of Kailua. This beach town is a popular spot for visitors and locals alike, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and beautiful beaches to enjoy. One of the most popular beaches is Kailua Beach Park, which boasts soft white sand and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.
If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, you can head to the nearby Maunawili Falls Trail. This moderate hiking trail winds through lush jungle foliage, crossing streams and culminating in a stunning waterfall. It’s a great way to get a bit of exercise while experiencing the natural beauty of the area.
As you make your way further up the coast, you’ll come across the town of Laie, home to the Polynesian Cultural Center. This immersive cultural experience takes you on a journey through the various Polynesian cultures, with live shows, interactive exhibits, and delicious food. It’s a great way to learn more about the history and traditions of this beautiful part of the world.
Finally, no trip to Oahu’s windward side would be complete without a visit to the iconic North Shore. This stretch of coastline is famous for its incredible waves, which attract surfers from around the world. You can watch the action from the shore, or even take a surf lesson yourself.
Overall, the windward side of Oahu is a beautiful and diverse part of the island, with something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences, you’ll find it all here. So pack your bags, grab your sunscreen, and get ready to experience the beauty and wonder of Oahu’s windward side!
